R U OK? Day, Thursday 9 September

Here at NUsport and The Forum, we acknowledge the importance of R U O K? Day.

R U OK? Is a national charity inspiring and empowering everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

Looking out for one another and lending support is critical as we face current challenges and focus on prioritising mental health and wellbeing.

Accessing support channels and asking ‘Are you OK’ can save a life. Whilst we may not be able to see some friends or family in the current circumstances, we are fortunate that we have technology available to connect. Connection is one of the best tools we have to help us get through difficult times. You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a friend, sibling, colleague, neighbour, and someone who is prepared to really listen.

This year's focus is "Are you (really) OK?”

Ask the question today to those in your network.

It is common to answer the question out of habit and say “I’m fine”, but following up with “Are you really OK?” can open conversations and encourage people to reach out for support.

The RU OK? Day website offers advice and an interactive conversation role playing video on how to ask and what to say after "R U OK?".

And this cover of the classic song ‘Lean on me’ performed virtually by students and alumni of the University of Newcastle will be sure to make you smile.

Stay safe and well Forum Family.
